Crusoe’s second stage was referred to as “the pet” because of its friendly, playful inquisitiveness — a combination of canine and seal. Next came the “awkward teenager” and then the total grownup version. To create Crusoe, Weta long-established maquettes (3-D sculptures) based on Codd’s renderings. Some observers, actually, found it downright homely, which maybe explains why Willys was quick to notice that the entrance-end styling of the prototype was subject to vary.
